GTA 6, Three Months Out: What Is Actually Confirmed

Editor8 min read

Grand Theft Auto VI ships in 89 days, and the volume of information circulating about it has almost no relationship to the volume of information that has actually been confirmed.

That gap widened sharply in August, when a leaker published gameplay footage and an alleged full map before Rockstar could. Leaked material is not confirmation — it is unverified, undated, and in this case comes from a source with a financial position attached to every release.

So here is the other list: the things Rockstar and Take-Two have said themselves, with dates, and the things that have been quietly assumed on top of them.

Key takeaways

  • 19 November 2026, PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Reaffirmed after the leaks.
  • Digital only. No disc at launch. $80 standard, $100 Ultimate — and Ultimate is about 89% of pre-orders.
  • No PC version announced. No date, no storefront, no requirements. Rockstar's history suggests late 2027–2028, which is a guess.
  • Take-Two's FY2027 forecast is $8.0–8.2bn in net bookings, roughly 20% growth, resting substantially on this one release.
  • Two delays, announced 2 May 2025 and 6 November 2025 — about 18 months cumulatively.
  • A union tribunal over 30–40 dismissals runs 10 September to 15 October 2026, three weeks after the reveal.

The date, and the two delays behind it

GTA 6 launches 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. That is the third date it has had.

The first trailer arrived in December 2023 with a 2025 window. On 2 May 2025, hours before the second trailer, Rockstar announced the game would miss it and set 26 May 2026. On 6 November 2025, alongside Take-Two's financial results, it moved again to 19 November 2026. Rockstar's statement was direct:

"We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve."

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick's shareholder letter gave no specific cause, saying only that the company remained "excited and confident" in the result. The cumulative slip from the original window is about 18 months.

Two things about that are worth holding onto. Rockstar delays nearly everything it makes, and the delays have historically been vindicated — this is not a studio with a record of shipping broken games to hit a date. And the date has now been reaffirmed since the leaks, both in Take-Two's own guidance and implicitly by the decision to run the Netflix reveal unchanged.

Digital only, $80 and $100 — and the split nobody expected

There is no physical edition of GTA 6 at launch. Pre-orders opened 25 June 2026, digital only: an $80 standard edition and a $100 Ultimate edition carrying vehicles, weapons, cosmetic content, in-game store access and two exclusive side missions.

The interesting number is the split. Data reported in July put the Ultimate edition at roughly 89% of pre-orders — near 90% on Xbox, 88.5% on PlayStation — and made the $100 version the top pre-ordered game in nine territories including the US, Canada, the UK, France and Japan.

Read that carefully, because it inverts the usual assumption. Deluxe editions are normally a minority upsell subsidised by a standard-edition majority. Here the $100 edition is the default purchase and the $80 edition is the exception. Zelnick described pre-orders as so unprecedented that the company could not yet say how they would translate into sales.

The absence of a disc is also the single most concrete grievance behind the leaks. CyberLeek's manifesto argues that pre-orders existed because physical stock could run out and that the practice has no remaining justification once the product is a download — "a digital copy cannot sell out." Whatever one makes of the method, the pre-order data shows the argument is not landing with buyers.

The PC question, answered honestly

Rockstar has announced nothing about a PC version. No release date. No storefront. No system requirements. Not a placeholder page.

The near-universal assumption that a PC release is coming is well-founded, because Rockstar has released every mainline Grand Theft Auto on PC eventually. But the timing figures circulating are extrapolation from two data points: GTA V reached PC about 18 months after console, Red Dead Redemption 2 about 13 months. Applied to 19 November 2026, that produces a window from late 2027 to sometime in 2028.

That is a reasonable inference and it is not a fact. Anyone quoting a specific PC date today is quoting arithmetic, not Rockstar.

Eight billion dollars, resting on one date

Take-Two reported its June quarter on 6 August 2026: net bookings of $1.39 billion, ahead of guidance, and net revenue of $1.53 billion. It reaffirmed full-year FY2027 net bookings guidance of $8.0–8.2 billion, against $6.72 billion the prior year — roughly 20% growth, concentrated overwhelmingly in one November release.

The quarter also contained a $43.4 million impairment from a cancelled unannounced new core IP title, while Judas and Project Ethos were described as on track.

The concentration is the point. A publisher guiding to 20% growth on the strength of a single title has almost no tolerance for that title slipping — which is context both for the reaffirmed date and for the speed of the legal response to the leaks. The same structural pressure, arriving from a different direction, is what we examined in what a debt-financed buyout does to a publisher.

For scale: the leak-driven share price move in August erased about $2.83 billion of market value in under two days and largely reversed within the week. Set against an $8 billion annual forecast, that was sentiment, not damage.

What the game itself is confirmed to be

Rockstar's own material — two trailers and accompanying character bios — establishes the following, and not much more.

Setting: the state of Leonida, with Vice City at its centre. Six regions have been named officially: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Hamlet and Kelly County.

Protagonists: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, the series' first playable female lead in the modern era. The supporting cast named in official bios includes Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, the duo Real Dimez and Raul Bautista.

Everything else — map size, mechanics, mission structure, online plans, the number of interiors — is inference, leak or hope. That is a strikingly short list for a game three months out, and it is deliberate: Rockstar's marketing has been unusually compressed this cycle, which is part of why the leaks landed as hard as they did.

That changes on 27 August, when Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premieres on Netflix at 3pm ET, then on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official site at 9pm ET. The Netflix exclusivity window is six hours. The title implies a longer format than a trailer, and it is the first official gameplay presentation the game has had.

The trial nobody is putting on the calendar

One more confirmed date, and it is the one least likely to appear in a GTA 6 preview.

On 30 October 2025, Rockstar dismissed between 30 and 40 developers, all connected to a private Discord server. Rockstar says the dismissals were for leaking confidential information. The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain, which the affected staff had joined as the newly formed Rockstar Game Workers Union, says they communicated only in private, legally protected trade union channels.

A preliminary employment tribunal upheld the dismissed workers' right to bring blacklisting claims, and the full trial runs from 10 September to 15 October 2026 — opening two weeks after the Netflix reveal and closing five weeks before launch.

The workers themselves have made an unusual public request: do not boycott GTA 6. That is worth stating plainly, because the boycott instinct is common and in this instance the people it would supposedly help have explicitly asked for the opposite.

Separately, Arion Kurtaj — convicted over the 2022 GTA 6 breach and given an indefinite hospital order in 2023 — has been moved to prison ahead of a retrial scheduled for November 2026, the month the game ships.

What is genuinely unknown

Reasonably established: the release date and platforms; the delay announcements and their dates; pre-order opening, pricing and the digital-only launch; the Ultimate edition share; Take-Two's quarterly figures and guidance; the Netflix presentation details; the six named regions and named cast; and the tribunal dates.

Not established:

  • Anything about a PC version. The date estimates are extrapolated from two prior releases.
  • The map. The image circulating from the leaks is an assertion until official material either matches it or does not.
  • Online plans. Rockstar has said essentially nothing about a multiplayer component or what happens to GTA Online, which currently generates real revenue.
  • Whether the leaks changed anything. Take-Two says no and has behaved accordingly. That is a position, not a proof, and the reveal is the first test of it.
  • Whether $8 billion is achievable. Zelnick's own framing — that pre-orders are unprecedented and the company cannot yet model the conversion — is candid about the uncertainty.

The next three months are unusually well signposted for a game this secretive: a gameplay reveal on 27 August, subpoena returns on 4 September, a tribunal from 10 September, a retrial in November, and a launch on 19 November. Very little of that is about the game. All of it will be reported as though it is.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When does GTA 6 come out?

19 November 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. The date has survived two delays and has been reaffirmed by Take-Two since the August 2026 leaks. Pre-orders opened on 25 June 2026.

How much does GTA 6 cost, and is there a disc version?

$80 for the standard edition and $100 for the Ultimate edition, both digital. There is no physical disc edition at launch. Pre-order data reported in July 2026 put the Ultimate edition at roughly 89% of pre-orders — around 90% on Xbox and 88.5% on PlayStation — making the $100 version the default purchase rather than the upsell.

Is GTA 6 coming to PC?

Not at launch, and Rockstar has announced nothing. As of August 2026 there is no PC release date, no named storefront and no published system requirements. Rockstar's own history is the only guide: GTA V reached PC about 18 months after console, Red Dead Redemption 2 about 13 months. That points to a window between late 2027 and 2028, which is an inference, not an announcement.

Why was GTA 6 delayed twice?

The first delay was announced on 2 May 2025, moving the game from a 2025 window to 26 May 2026. The second came on 6 November 2025 alongside Take-Two's financial results, moving it to 19 November 2026. Rockstar said the extra months would let it finish the game to the standard players expect; CEO Strauss Zelnick did not give a specific reason in his shareholder letter. The cumulative slip is roughly 18 months.

What is Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look?

Rockstar's first substantial gameplay presentation, premiering on Netflix on 27 August 2026 at 3pm ET, then on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official GTA VI site six hours later at 9pm ET. It is not a conventional trailer — the title signals a longer format — and it goes ahead unchanged despite the leaks that preceded it.

How Take-Two Is Hunting the GTA 6 Leaker Without Suing Anyone

Take-Two got court-ordered access to Microsoft and Discord records in a single day, without filing a lawsuit or naming a defendant. The tool is a DMCA subpoena — fast, cheap, rarely explained, and in this case aimed at a great many people who did nothing.
